I was listening to an interview on the working of the heart and in the midst of the interview, the condition of the world as it stands today was mentioned as one thing affecting our heart, emotions, health etc. But something else that was brought up was the morality of today. The host said that morality was at a low. That the moral standard had drastically dropped affecting the behavior and emotional makeup of mankind. And I thought immediately, “Who decides what is moral?” I mean, really? How far back does that privilege go to who gets to decide what is acceptable moral behavior among the populace?
I would have to go back centuries to find the inhabitants of a community living with the freedom to express what should be natural and healthy to human life. We are sexual beings. The act of being sexual with one another is as natural as eating and breathing. And I’ll add, just as vital to our well being.
Whether it was religion or politics or the combination of the two, I find as I look throughout history that the control of the residents of a community, region, or country under the guise of forming a healthy and functioning society, was the catalyst to gag and imprison a God-given right to express what has been naturally and freely given to mankind. Our sexuality.
To blame sexuality for increased violence, hatred, depression, and a fragmented society is akin to blaming the act of eating for the increase of disease and calling it immoral. Eating is a natural function. How we eat and what we eat is a personal choice. How we, as people express our sexuality, is also a personal choice and should not be judged by society, politics or religion.
Violence against another, hatred, depression and a fragmented nation are symptoms of a society that has lost its humanity. We are flesh and blood beings of carbon-based DNA, not machines. Human touch has become something to be feared and technology, as much as I enjoy it, has widened the gulf between the touch of humans.
Why have people turned to alternative lifestyles, especially when it comes to the expression of their sexuality? I believe because they want to FEEL again.
And as a species, we’ll never come to an agreement on the definition of morality. Not as long as religion and politics yearn to control basic human behavior.
Yes, change is all around us. Yes, many countries are in turmoil. But morality is not a root cause. Because morality is only in the mind of the individual person birthed from their own ethics.
